Getting texts or phone calls claiming to be Indeed? It might be a scam

Quick summary

Getting a job offer through a text message or phone call can be exciting, but be careful. It might be a scam. Indeed will never ask jobseekers for payment through WhatsApp, Telegram or phone calls. Be cautious of unsolicited messages from people pretending to be recruiters or claiming to be from Indeed. Here are some tips to help you protect yourself from text scams and fake phone calls.

Recognising a call or text scam

Pretending to be from Indeed

  • Creating a sense of urgency like revoking access to your account or resolving a technical issue within a time limit
  • Requiring you to share personal details or sign-in credentials
Important: you can only change or update your account through Indeed.com or the mobile app.

Pretending to be an employer

  • Making enticing offers or opportunities that seem too good to be true
  • Asking you to click a link or contact them through another communication channel

Employers should contact you through Indeed

  • We don’t share your contact details with employers
  • They can contact you through Messages on Indeed
  • Employers can only call you if you give them your phone number when you apply

Other common scams

  • Posing as a familiar company or person, such as your bank, service provider, CEO or distant relative
  • Claiming you have a package that’s being held by your local postal service with a ‘Click here’ link to resolve it
  • Impersonating tax agencies demanding payment immediately
  • Claiming to be tech support for an urgent fix to your device

These scams aim to steal your personal information. This can include your identity, finances, login credentials or even access to your devices.

Protecting yourself from call or text scams

Stop communicating

  • Stop all contact with anyone you suspect might be a scammer
  • Don’t share any personal information
  • Block the caller’s phone number

Report the call

  • Report suspicious phone calls or messages to local law enforcement
  • If you believe scammers are using a legitimate business’s name, contact the business to report the fraudulent use of their name or information
