Improving your job searches (tips and help)

Quick summary

Employers post hundreds of new jobs every month. Sifting through so many jobs can be hard, frustrating and sometimes stressful. This guide shares simple steps to get better matches.

Use different keywords, phrases and locations

Tip: Results can adjust based on prior searches, your job search preferences and activity on Indeed. Sign in to get better results.

In the search field

  • Try keyword combinations (for example, customer support, call centre, help desk).
  • Job titles can vary by company. Add related terms to widen results.

In the location field

  • Enter a postcode to target a radius around a place.
  • Titles can vary by region. Consider nearby cities or a broader area.

Apply filters to refine your results

After your first search, use filters to narrow results. These filters can vary based on your location and searches. Some of the filter options are:

  • Pay
  • Work setting (remote, hybrid, in-person)
  • Work area (industry or field)
  • Job type (full‑time, part‑time, contract, etc.)
  • Education level
  • Date posted
Tip: After refining, create a job alert to get email updates that match these filters.

Try advanced search techniques

Search by job title

  • Use title:
    • Example: title: 'product manager'

Search for an exact phrase

  • Use quotation marks.
    • Example: 'maths skills'
  • Useful for phrases like 'flexible hours' or 'part-time'.

Group and combine keywords

  • Use OR to include either word.
    • Example: (teacher OR instructor)
  • Use AND to include both words.
    • Example: sales AND healthcare

Exclude words using a dash

  • Add a dash before a word to remove it.
    • Example: nurse -intern
  • You can't search for '-intern' alone.

Exclude jobs that mention security clearance

  • Add 'no security clearance' at the end of your search
    • Example: 'Data engineer no security clearance'

Search by company name

  • Use company:
    • Example: company: 'Charles Schwab'
